‘Something’ Special: Eric Benét & Tamar Braxton Top Adult R&B Airplay

By | Leave a Comment

Eric Benét and Tamar Braxton are making waves on the charts with their soulful duet, “Something We Can Make Love To,” which has climbed to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart dated November 23. This milestone marks a major comeback for both artists, highlighting their enduring influence in the R&B genre.

Eric Benét's Return to No. 1

For Benét, this is his fourth time leading the Adult R&B Airplay chart and his first No. 1 in 14 years. His previous chart-toppers include:

  • “Spend My Life With You” featuring Tamia (1999, five weeks at No. 1)
  • “You’re The Only One” (2008, five weeks)
  • “Sometimes I Cry” (2010, five weeks)

The 14-year gap places him among other R&B icons who’ve recently made similar comebacks. For instance:

  • Tyrese's “Wildflower,” which preceded “Something” at No. 1, marked his first chart leader in nine years.
  • Kenny Lattimore’s “Take a Dose” achieved a No. 1 position earlier this year, 26 years after his debut hit, “For You.”

Tamar Braxton’s Chart Milestone

For Braxton, “Something We Can Make Love To” becomes her second Adult R&B Airplay No. 1. Her previous chart-topper, “Love and War,” dominated for nine weeks in 2013.

Between her last No. 1 and this current success, Braxton has consistently come close to reclaiming the top spot, with notable near-misses:

  • “Crazy Kind of Love” (2020): Peaked at No. 2, held off by Charlie Wilson’s “What I Got.”
  • “Changed” (2023): Spent five weeks at No. 2, trailing behind Janelle Monáe’s “Lipstick Lover” and October London’s “Back to Your Place.”

Broadening Success Beyond Adult R&B

“Something We Can Make Love To” is also gaining traction on other charts:

  • Climbs 19-15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, reaching a 5.9 million audience, a 9% increase from the previous week.
  • Debuts at No. 24 on the Hot R&B Songs chart, which factors in streaming, airplay, and sales.

For Benét, this is his second appearance on the Hot R&B Songs chart, following 2013’s “News for You.” Meanwhile, Braxton secures her ninth entry on the 12-year-old chart.

A Testament to Longevity in R&B

The success of “Something We Can Make Love To” underscores the staying power of both Eric Benét and Tamar Braxton. Their collaboration blends timeless vocal chemistry with contemporary appeal, resonating with long-time fans and newer audiences alike.

As the song continues to climb charts and garner attention, it’s clear that both artists are far from done making their mark on the R&B landscape. Whether it’s through their soulful harmonies or their undeniable impact on the genre, Benét and Braxton remind listeners why they remain pillars of modern R&B.
